Dating back to the 12th century, Glasgow Fair is one of the oldest holidays in the Scottish calendar and has been celebrated for many years.

It started as an annual 8-day fair in July, before developing into an exciting festival where people would be entertained by travelling performers, a circus and theatre shows.

By the 1800s, it had become the city’s holiday fortnight when factories, shipyards and businesses would shut down completely so workers could enjoy some time off.

Glasgow Fair became a major event in the city.

To give you an idea, back in 1855, over 14,000 people left Glasgow in steamers, with another 26,000 people leaving the city by train.

Glaswegians would often visit the Firth of Clyde or the Ayrshire coast. This was known as going ‘doon the watter’, meaning ‘down the water’ in the Glasgow dialect.

Today, a public holiday is observed on the third Monday in July, known as Glasgow Fair Monday. It remains a popular time for enjoying a holiday.
