Located in Western Tuscany on the banks of the River Arno, Pisa is a picturesque little city that’s bursting with elegance and charm.

Once an important harbour town, today the city holds a breath-taking collection of Romanesque buildings, gothic churches and Renaissance piazzas, all waiting to be explored.

A great place to start your coach break in Pisa is at stunning Campo dei Miracoli, or ‘Field of Miracles’, where you will find a quartet of architectural masterpieces all within a stone’s throw. Marvel at the lavish frescoes by Pisano at the Cathedral Duomo di Pisa and take time to visit the Camponsanto, widely regarded as the most beautiful cemetery in the world.

After that, feast your eyes on stunning ornate marble exterior and cupula of the Baptistery before venturing inside to hear the incredible acoustics which echo round the chambers for up to 12 seconds.

The highlight of your coach trip to Pisa is, of course, the iconic Leaning Tower, whose 207 columns arranged around eight storeys remain standing an angle of four degrees due to complex physics. Feel the lean for yourself as you climb 60 metres to its summit and enjoy breath-taking views which stretch as far as the Port of Tuscany and the Apuan Alps.

Once back down to earth, why not take a souvenir photo of yourself pretending to push the tower over?

History and art buffs will also enjoy the Museo Nazional di San Matteo, featuring famous works by Giunta, Pisano, Memmi and Martini and the Palazzo Reale National Museum, where you can see rich tapestries by artists like Raffaello.

Make sure to stroll along the river to admire the beautiful coloured buildings and the Santa Maria della Spina.

After indulging in the culture, you’re certain to have worked up an appetite. Head into one of the pavement trattorias to enjoy the local cuisine, including some of the best pizzas and pasta dishes in Italy, plus local dishes made from produce locally grown in the region or seafood caught locally.

Pisa also has its fair share of shops to satisfy shopaholics. Head down Borgo Stretto, browse the boutiques of Corso Italia or lose yourself in the colourful markets.
