Following successful stints on Broadway and London’s West End, Sister Act is back with its latest tour of UK theatres.
If you haven’t seen the film and don’t know the plot, Sister Act tells the story of nightclub singer and wannabe diva Deloris Van Cartier who, after witnessing her boyfriend murder one on his henchmen, seeks sanctuary in the only safe place in town - a struggling inner city convent!
There she is forced against her will to not only disguise as a nun called Sister Mary Clarence for her own safety but also tow the Lord’s line under the watchful eye of Mother Superior.
After leading the other nuns astray on more than one occasion, Deloris is punished by being placed in charge of the convent’s caterwauling choir.
But this is her calling, and she soon injects some much needed energy and cool dance moves to rehearsals as she helps the sisters find their voices, with some rather surprising results.
The only problem for Deloris is that in transforming the tuneless sisters into a soul singing machine, she catapults the convent into the media spotlight and blows her own cover.
Stepping into Whoopi Goldberg’s shoes as Deloris is Alexandra Burke, who excels in the lead role. She embraces Deloris’s character wholeheartedly and delivers it with plenty of sass and attitude to the role whilst showcasing her incredible vocal talent.
Directed and choreographed by Strictly judge Craig Revel Horwood and featuring a sensational score by multi-award winner Alan Menken, Sister Act is a real heart-warming story and possibly the grooviest and funkiest musical ever.
