For over 20 years the Railway in Wartime Weekend has attracted thousands of visitors to North Yorkshire Moors railway to recapture the make do and mend spirit of the 1940s.

It has earned an international reputation for authenticity due to the hundreds of re-enactors who flock to the railway for this wartime celebration.

Every year the event starts when a ceremonial flag is raised to illustrate that the railway has been handed over to the re-enactors and is lowered on the final day.

The Wartime Weekend provides a rare opportunity to travel as they did in the 40s on a selection of preserved and lovingly-restored steam locomotives.

You will be greeted by wartime characters at every station and joined on-board the railway’s restored carriages by servicemen and women, factory workers, land army girls and nurses.

The quaint stations along the route are each transformed to perfectly replicate the war period with war signs, notices, sandbags, taped up windows and plenty of live entertainment and activities.

Pickering has a 1940s wartime street, Levisham becomes German occupied French village Le Visham for the weekend, Goathland is home to the Home Guard and Grosmont is an RAF base featuring a replica Spitfire in the car park and an authentic RAF Dispersal Hut,
