For one weekend every year the small Yorkshire town of Brighouse turns back the clock to commemorate the make do and mend spirit of the 1940s.

The event is one of the premier 1940s events in the country and hugely popular, attracting over 80,000 people over the two days.

Throughout the event the entire town goes back in time with re-enactments, music, dance and family entertainment.

The streets are adorned by revellers dressed to the nines in genuine 1940s civilian and military gear. You’ll see all sorts of wonderful characters from the time including the Home Guard, Air Force officers, the French Resistance, Luftwaffe pilots, the local bobby on the beat, Land Army girls and spivs.

There’s even an appearance from King George VI and wartime Prime Ministers Winston Churchill and Neville Chamberlain who provide rousing speeches to rally the spirits and join in with the sing-a-longs to wartime favourites.

On the streets there’s sight and sounds around every corner. Enjoy a parade of the armed forces, watch the many re-enactments taking place, see the many military and vintage vehicles on show, and gaze to the skies for a flyover from a Dakota.

At the local civic hall you can catch performances from George Formby and Vera Lynn, gain some lessons in Lindy Hop dancing and watch a wartime play.

There’s plenty to keep young children amused too, including fairground attractions and steam train rides.

For a vintage weekend of pure nostalgia, make sure you put it in your calendar of things to do for 2016. And better still, it’s free to attend, making for a great family fun weekend. Book today with National Holidays! Check availability using the Holiday Search above.
