It was King Charles II who first introduced the Trooping the Colour ceremony so soldiers could recognise the colours of their regiment amongst dust and smog when in battle. This trooping was part of the officers’ daily routine.

Following the accession of George IV it was ordered that the Trooping of the Colour be introduced to mark the King’s birthday and open to the public.

The parade starts with the Royal Procession as The Queen arrives in her ivory-mounted phaeton, drawn by a pair of matched Windsor Grey horses.

The Queen then takes the Royal Salute and carries out an inspection of her Division before each of the ranks of march past with impeccable timing

The Office in Command then reads out the 113 word command to mark the parade.
