Completely landlocked in central Italy close the Adriatic coast, San Marino is a picturesque coach holiday destination that’s small but perfectly formed.
The country is believed to have been founded in the 4th Century by a monk called Marinus who fled religious persecution and found refuge in the craggy hills of Monte Titano.
Since then, through a combination of diplomacy and luck, the country has held on to its independent status with its own stamps, military force, known as the ‘Guard of the Rock’, and of course it’s infamous national football team.
The enchanting capital city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that lies behind a spectacular citadel atop Monte Titano, some 750 metres above sea level.
Once you reach the top, the views from Piazza della Liberta will stay with your forever. On a clear day you can see as far as the Adriatic Sea on one side and the hills of Central Italy on the other.
While in the pretty square, don’t pass up on the opportunity to watch the Changing of the Guard, a daily tradition and wonderful sight.
After that, explore the ramparts of its iconic towers, Guaita and Cesta and peek inside to discover more about the state’s fascinating history.
Stroll the ancient cobbled streets lined with colourful buildings before discovering the elaborate paintings of Palazzo Pubblico and the beautiful neo-classical architecture of The Basilica di San Marino.
There are a few quirky attractions too, including a Torture Museum, Wax Museum and Curiosity Museum.
On a coach holiday to San Marino, the best souvenir you can pick up is some rare San Marino ‘Scudo’ currency and stamps. Why not post yourself a postcard in one of the state’s white postboxes as a memento of your break?
