Oban has grown from a small quaint fishing village to a bustling harbour town and one of Scotland’s most visited coastal resorts.
The town itself lies in the basin of a crescent overlooked by its most famous landmark McCaig's Tower, a Colosseum-like folly built around 1900 as a monument to the McCaig family.
Gateway to the Isles, Oban
You can venture up to the Colosseum-type structure overlooking the town and take in the scenery from its hillside position. It is a great place to enjoy a relaxing picnic and from which to take fantastic panoramic photographs of the bay looking out to sea.
The town also offers plenty of popular visitor attractions, including the famous Oban whisky distillery, two cathedrals (St John's Episcopal Cathedral and St Columba's Roman Catholic Cathedral), and the excellent Oban War & Peace Museum. On the harbour you can watch the fleet of fishing boats plying their trade or take a boat trip out to sea to enjoy breath-taking views of the bay, right along the coast to the ruined keep of Dunollie Castle.
